โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the calculator step by step?

Simply enter the calories per 100g (found on food labels), the price information, and optionally a product name. Choose "Per Kilogram" mode for most store products or "Per Piece" mode for individually sold items. Click "Add Product" and compare the cost per 100 kcal in the results table.

What's the difference between "Per Kilogram" and "Per Piece" modes?

"Per Kilogram" mode is for bulk products sold by weight (rice, meat, vegetables). "Per Piece" mode is for individually packaged items where you know the weight per piece (yogurt cups, protein bars, frozen meals). The mode you choose depends on how the product is sold in the store.

Where do I find the calories per 100g information?

Look at the nutrition facts label on any packaged food. It's usually listed as "Energy" or "Calories" per 100g. For fresh produce, you can find this information online in nutrition databases or food tracking apps like MyFitnessPal.

Can I use this calculator on my phone while shopping?

Absolutely! The calculator is designed to be mobile-friendly. You can add it to your phone's home screen for quick access while grocery shopping. Just tap the share button in your browser and select "Add to Home Screen."

Does the calculator save my product comparisons?

Yes, all your product data is saved locally in your browser. When you return to the site, your previous comparisons will still be there. However, this data is only stored on your device and isn't shared with anyone.

How do I convert prices if products are sold in different units?

For products sold by weight but not per kilogram, divide the price by the weight and multiply by 1000. For example: 500g for $3 = $3 รท 0.5kg = $6/kg. The calculator handles this automatically in "Per Piece" mode when you enter the piece weight.

What should I do if two products have very similar costs per 100 kcal?

When costs are similar, consider other factors like nutritional quality, satiety, shelf life, and personal preferences. A small difference in calorie cost might not be worth sacrificing foods you enjoy or that provide better nutrition.

Can I compare products from different stores?

Yes! The calculator is perfect for comparing the same products across different stores, or comparing different brands. Just enter each product separately with its respective store price to see which offers the best value per calorie.

Why do some healthy foods show higher costs per calorie?

Foods high in water content (like vegetables) or low in energy density naturally cost more per calorie. This doesn't mean they're bad value โ€“ they provide essential nutrients, fiber, and satiety. Use the calculator alongside nutritional considerations, not as the only factor.

Is there a limit to how many products I can compare?

You can add up to 500 products to prevent performance issues. For most users, comparing 10-20 products is sufficient to make informed decisions. You can always delete products you no longer need to compare.
